Mexico end group stage with perfect record

Mexico secured maximum points in Group A after a dominant second-half display against the Czech Republic.

Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 in their final Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, completing the group stage with three wins from three games and ending the Czechs’ tournament campaign.

The co-hosts had already secured qualification and top spot in the group before kick-off, allowing head coach Javier Aguirre to rotate his squad. The changes paid off as left-back Mateo Chavez scored his first international goal shortly after halftime to break the deadlock.

Teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora, making his first World Cup start, impressed throughout the match and played a key role in Mexico’s second goal. After Mora’s pass set up Jorge Sanchez, Julian Quinones capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to score his second goal of the tournament. Substitute Alvaro Fidalgo later added a third with a superb finish into the top corner.

At 17 years and 253 days old, Mora became the youngest player to start a World Cup match for Mexico and the sixth-youngest starter in men’s World Cup history.

The match also featured a memorable appearance from veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. The 40-year-old came off the bench late in the game, becoming one of the few players to be part of six World Cup tournaments, alongside stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Mexico will now face one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams in the Round of 32, while the Czech Republic exit the competition after finishing bottom of Group A with just one point.

Mexico march into the knockout stage with confidence, while the Czech Republic bow out of the 2026 World Cup.
