Scotland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage now depend on results elsewhere after a costly defeat to Brazil.
Brazil secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Scotland in Miami to finish top of Group C, leaving Steve Clarke’s side facing an anxious wait to discover whether they can still qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Vinicius Jr opened the scoring after capitalising on a defensive error from Scott McKenna before adding a second goal in first-half stoppage time. Matheus Cunha sealed the win in the second half after another turnover in possession from the Scottish side.
Despite enjoying periods of possession and creating a few opportunities, Scotland were undone by defensive mistakes against the five-time World Cup champions.
Scotland ended the group stage with three points after defeating Haiti in their opening match. However, their chances of progressing to the last 32 now depend on how other groups conclude in the coming days.
The result sends Brazil into the knockout stage as Group C winners, while Scotland must wait to learn if their World Cup journey will continue.
