‘You can’t wish away hunger by denial’ — Obidient Movement knocks Onanuga

Obidients

The Obidient Movement has criticised Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, over his claim that he does not see the level of hunger many Nigerians complain about.

The movement issued the statement on Wednesday.

Its reaction followed Onanuga’s comments during an interview on Arise Television.

‘Government is detached’

The movement said Onanuga’s remarks showed that the Tinubu administration is disconnected from the realities facing ordinary Nigerians.

It described the comments as insensitive and dismissive.

“The recent statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga that he does not see the level of hunger people are complaining about is a profound insult to millions of Nigerians struggling daily to survive,” the statement reads.

“It confirms what many citizens already believe — that this administration is dangerously detached from the realities confronting the people it governs.”

Cites rising hardship

Furthermore, the movement said many Nigerians can no longer afford basic necessities.

It claimed the cost of living has risen sharply under the current administration.

According to the statement, inflation has weakened purchasing power and forced many families deeper into poverty.

It also alleged that businesses are shutting down because of rising energy costs, multiple taxes and exchange rate instability.

Raises security concerns

Meanwhile, the movement said insecurity remains a major challenge across the country.

It argued that terrorists, bandits and criminal gangs continue to attack communities despite government assurances.

The group also said many schoolchildren and other victims remain in captivity.

Urges government to act

In addition, the movement urged the federal government to address the country’s economic and security challenges.

It said public relations campaigns cannot erase the hardship Nigerians face.

“The first duty of any government is the welfare and security of its people,” the statement reads.

“No amount of public relations can erase empty dinner tables.”

“No media spin can persuade hungry Nigerians that hunger does not exist.”

The movement urged the government to restore economic stability, improve security and rebuild public trust instead of denying citizens’ experiences.
