Donald Trump has threatened fresh tariffs on Canada, blaming the country for wildfire smoke affecting millions of Americans.
US President Donald Trump says he may impose new tariffs on Canada over the ongoing wildfire crisis, accusing Ottawa of failing to properly manage its forests. In a social media post, Trump claimed smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires had filled US cities with “filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air” and said he would demand answers from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The remarks came as nearly 900 wildfires continue to burn across Canada, with more than 190 active fires in Ontario alone. Thick smoke has triggered hazardous air quality alerts across several US states, including New York, Michigan, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Canada Rejects Trump’s Claims
Canadian officials rejected the accusations, saying both countries have a long history of cooperating on wildfire emergencies. Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged US leaders to send firefighting support instead of criticism, while Prime Minister Mark Carney stressed that climate change remains a shared global challenge.
Scientists say extreme heat, dry conditions and climate change have intensified this year’s wildfire season, making many of the remote fires difficult to control.
The tariff threat adds fresh tension to already-strained US-Canada relations as both countries continue negotiations over trade and border issues.
