The Southern Political Progressives Amalgamation Forum has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to choose its vice-presidential candidate carefully. The group said the decision could shape the party’s chances in the 2027 presidential election.
According to the forum, the ADC should nominate a running mate with broad acceptance across the South. It added that the candidate should also have strong electoral value and national appeal.
Forum reacts to reports linking Amaechi to ADC ticket
The appeal followed reports linking former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, to the ADC’s vice-presidential ticket. Amaechi also served as governor of Rivers State. The reports suggested he could emerge as the running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
A statement signed by Comrades Anga Fidelis, Eniafe Ayomide and Johnson Iheanacho urged the party to focus on decisions that would improve its electoral chances. The group said political calculations should not outweigh national interest.
Forum lists qualities ADC should consider
The forum urged the ADC to adopt a strategy that expands its support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. It said the running mate should enjoy national appeal. The candidate should also have political experience, grassroots support and the ability to complement the presidential candidate.
The statement said:
“The choice of a vice-presidential candidate is a strategic decision that could shape the outcome of the election. The ADC should ensure that whoever emerges enjoys broad acceptance and can contribute meaningfully to the party’s electoral success.”
Group calls for a united presidential ticket
The forum said the ADC should present a ticket that appeals to Nigerians seeking an alternative political platform. It also urged the party’s leadership to make decisions that promote unity and strengthen confidence among members and supporters.
The group added that building a broad coalition across regions and interest groups would be crucial. It said such a strategy would improve the party’s chances in the 2027 presidential election.
The statement further said:
“The ADC has an opportunity to present a united and inclusive ticket that can inspire confidence among Nigerians. The party should place national interest and electoral viability above every other consideration.”
Forum expresses confidence in ADC
The forum said the ADC could become more competitive before the 2027 election. It maintained that careful planning would strengthen the party. It also said internal unity and a widely accepted ticket would improve its chances.
However, neither the ADC nor Rotimi Amaechi had responded to the forum’s position as of the time this report was filed.
