Josh Kerr Breaks 27-Year Mile World Record at London Diamond League

Britain’s Josh Kerr produced a historic run to become the fastest man ever over the mile.

Great Britain’s Josh Kerr has broken the men’s mile world record after clocking 3:42.66 at the London Diamond League. The 28-year-old surpassed Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27-year-old record by nearly half a second in front of a sold-out crowd of 60,000 at London Stadium.

Kerr dominated the race from start to finish, pulling away after the pacemakers stepped aside. He also passed the 1,500m mark faster than his own British record before finishing strongly to secure one of the greatest performances in British athletics history.

Kerr Delivers on His World Record Promise

Kerr announced in March that he intended to break the world record on home soil and spent months preparing for what he called “Project 222”. The campaign included specialised training, custom-designed racing gear and a carefully planned record attempt.

The victory makes Kerr the first British athlete to hold the men’s mile world record since Steve Cram in 1985. He also happens to be the seventh Briton to achieve the feat.

The record is expected to stand as one of the biggest highlights of the 2026 athletics season. It will also cement the Scot’s place among the sport’s all-time greats.
