The Emir of Potiskum, Alhaji Umaru Bubaram Ibn Wuriwa Bauya, has urged Nigerian leaders to adopt broader solutions to tackle insecurity, saying military operations alone cannot restore lasting peace.
The traditional ruler also advised governments at all levels to confront poverty, injustice and other social problems that continue to fuel violence across the country.
Emir calls for inclusive leadership
Speaking on the state of the nation, the monarch described Nigeria’s ethnic and cultural diversity as a major strength rather than a challenge.
According to him, every Nigerian should feel included regardless of ethnic or religious background.
“Nigeria is a complex and beautifully diverse country, blessed with over three hundred ethnic groups, each with its own customs and languages. Diversity should never be viewed as a weakness. It is our greatest strength. Every Nigerian deserves to feel a sense of belonging, which inherently inspires public cooperation for national development,” he said.
Monarch says force cannot solve insecurity
The Emir stressed that security agencies alone cannot end the country’s security challenges.
He urged leaders to focus on the root causes of conflict instead of relying only on military action.
“Insecurity cannot be solved by force alone. Leaders must address the underlying socioeconomic causes of conflict with sincerity and justice,” the monarch said.
He added that leaders must govern fairly and put citizens’ welfare above personal interests.
“A national leader must act like a good parent, listening to every child without discrimination, correcting mistakes with wisdom and ensuring everyone feels valued. When leaders put the welfare of the citizenry above personal interests, the nation will make meaningful progress,” he stated.
Traditional rulers have key role to play
The Emir also highlighted the role of traditional institutions in promoting peace and resolving disputes before they become major conflicts.
He said traditional rulers understand the needs of their communities because they live among the people.
“Because we live among the people, we understand their challenges firsthand. This uniquely positions us to advise the government, facilitate peaceful dialogue and resolve local issues before they escalate. Traditional rulers must champion community development, promote education, support economic activities and foster peace,” he insisted.
The monarch further urged political and traditional leaders to lead with justice, sincerity and accountability. He added that history would judge leaders by the positive impact they make rather than the positions they hold.
