Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has announced plans to formally join the Accord Party, following the recent defection of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Davido disclosed the move in a post on his verified X page on Tuesday. He revealed that he would travel to Osun State on Wednesday to collect his party membership card in Osogbo.
“I will be live in Osun to pick up my @AccordPartyNG membership card at Imole House, Osogbo, tomorrow,” the singer wrote. He also tagged Governor Ademola Adeleke in the post.
Move Follows Adeleke’s Defection From PDP
The announcement comes barely two weeks after Governor Adeleke dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Accord Party. The governor made the move ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.
Adeleke formally unveiled the Accord Party as his new political platform on December 9, 2025, at the Government House in Osogbo. National and state leaders of the party attended the event.
According to the governor, leadership crises within the PDP influenced his decision to defect. He said the Accord Party offered a stable platform for his re-election bid.
Adeleke Explains Choice of Accord Party
Speaking during the defection ceremony, Governor Adeleke said he joined the Accord Party on November 6, 2025, after wide consultations with stakeholders.
“We opted for the Accord Party because its philosophy of welfarism aligns with our focus on citizens and workers’ welfare,” the governor said.
He added that he submitted his resignation letter to the PDP in November, officially ending his membership of the party.
Davido’s Political Move Sparks Online Buzz
Davido had earlier reacted to his uncle’s resignation from the PDP by reposting the announcement with the caption, “Jeje…”. However, his decision to formally join the Accord Party has generated stronger reactions.
Many political observers say the move highlights the growing intersection between celebrity influence and politics in Nigeria. As a result, discussions around youth participation and pop culture in governance have intensified.
Meanwhile, Davido remains one of Africa’s most influential artistes. He rose to fame in 2012 with Dami Duro and has since released several successful albums, including Timeless and 5ive.
