Nigeria have suffered a fresh injury setback ahead of their AFCON 2025 Round of 16 clash against Mozambique, following the withdrawal of forward Cyriel Dessers from the squad.
The development comes just days before the knockout fixture scheduled for Monday, January 5, in Fes, Morocco, raising concerns over squad depth.
Dessers Returns to Club After Thigh Injury
Confirming the update on Friday, Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe said the 31-year-old attacker sustained a thigh injury and has returned to his club side in Greece.
“A thigh injury has ruled Cyriel Dessers out of the team. He has now returned to his club,” Efoghe said.
As a result, the Super Eagles will approach the crucial encounter without the striker’s experience.
Reduced Squad in Training
Meanwhile, Nigeria continued preparations with a reduced squad. Efoghe disclosed that only 25 players participated in training on Thursday as intensity increased ahead of the match.
According to him, Ryan Alebiosu and Tochukwu Nnadi were absent from the session.
Update on Alebiosu, Nnadi
Providing further clarification, Efoghe said Alebiosu is still recovering from a deep cut injury sustained during his Super Eagles debut against Tanzania. On the other hand, Nnadi missed training due to illness.
“Twenty-five players trained on Friday evening. Ryan Alebiosu was present but did not participate fully as his recovery continues. Tochukwu Nnadi also sat out due to a cold,” he added.
Coach Urges Full Focus on Knockout Stage
However, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has urged the squad to put their group-stage performances behind them. According to Efoghe, the coach called for renewed focus and discipline as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
Consequently, the team has intensified preparations for the must-win encounter.
Nigeria will face Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday, with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Fes.
