Court Adjourns Case Against Anthony Joshua’s Driver to January 20

The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the fatal road accident that killed two close associates of boxing star Anthony Joshua.

However, the Sagamu Magistrate Court adjourned the case to January 20, 2026, to allow for further proceedings.

Driver Charged in Sagamu

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared before the court on Friday. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arraignment in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

Babaseyi said the court fixed the adjournment date to enable proper handling of the case.

Arraignment Follows Arrest

The arraignment came two days after the police confirmed Adeniyi’s arrest. The crash occurred on December 29, 2025, near Danco along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The accident claimed the lives of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian citizen, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British national. Both men worked as members of Joshua’s training and support team.

Details of the Crash

Police sources said Adeniyi was allegedly driving above the 65mph speed limit when a tyre burst occurred during an overtaking manoeuvre.

The Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, reportedly crashed into an illegally parked truck carrying soya beans on the hard shoulder. The impact ripped off the nearside section of the vehicle.

Ayodele and Ghami died instantly. Meanwhile, Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.

Driver Treated, Questioned

Adeniyi received treatment for minor injuries at a Lagos hospital and was discharged on New Year’s Eve. Police later drove him to Abeokuta for questioning at the state headquarters. A police source said the driver provided his account of the incident and remained in stable condition.

Joshua Discharged, Pays Last Respects

Earlier, the Lagos and Ogun state governments announced that Anthony Joshua had been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to recover at home.

In a joint statement, officials said Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home to pay their final respects. The bodies of the deceased were later flown to London via Istanbul for burial.

Investigation Continues

Police said investigations into the crash remain ongoing. They also disclosed that the driver of the parked truck fled the scene, prompting a manhunt.

The next court sitting on January 20 is expected to clarify the charges against Adeniyi and reveal further findings from the investigation.
