A 29-year-old man, Silas Simon, has been sentenced to four months of non-custodial service for stealing cable wires connected to satellite equipment in Abuja.
Simon was sentenced by Chief Magistrate’s Court 4 sitting in Wuse Zone 6 after he pleaded guilty to the charge. The prosecution told the court that Simon admitted cutting and stealing the cables after a complaint was lodged.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the nominal complainant claimed that the stolen cables were worth about N10 million. In her ruling, the magistrate ordered Simon to serve his four-month non-custodial sentence through community service at a police station. The court warned that failure to comply with the order would result in the revocation of the non-custodial sentence.
Simon would then serve a 45-day jail term at the correctional facility in Keffi. The magistrate also noted that any claim for compensation relating to the alleged N10 million loss could be pursued separately through a civil action.
