Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, has said his administration would not create an Office of the First Lady if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Sowore said the position has no basis in the Nigerian Constitution. He clarified that becoming president would not change his marital status, saying his wife would not assume any official role.
“There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming the president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady,” he said.

Sowore said women would remain represented in his government, while questioning the allocation of public funds to an office he considers unconstitutional.
“Women will be heard,” he said, adding that government resources should not be spent on maintaining such an office. He described the decision as a deliberate policy position for his proposed administration.
“I am just telling you as a matter of policy that there won’t be an office of the first lady under the Sowore presidency,” he said.
His comments come as political parties and presidential hopefuls step up preparations for the 2027 general elections.
