Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he will support anybody who emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including Peter Obi.
Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television, Atiku said the coalition within the party is prioritising consensus in selecting its presidential candidate.
“I would support anybody who emerges,” he said.
He explained that the first option for the party is to adopt a consensus candidate, adding that a direct primary would be considered if consensus fails.
“The first option would be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t emerge, then we go for a direct primary,” he said.
Atiku expressed confidence that disagreements would be managed, noting that those involved are experienced politicians committed to a common goal.
“We are dealing with mature and experienced politicians… we have all agreed that this is the way to save democracy in this country,” he said.
On whether he would step aside if another aspirant, including Obi, emerges as the preferred candidate, Atiku said he would abide by the outcome of a credible process.
“I will step aside for any winner… including Peter Obi, if he emerges,” he said.
The former vice-president added that the coalition reflects a generational mix of political actors, suggesting that the process is designed to ensure continuity and broad representation.
He insisted that whichever method is adopted — consensus or primary election — must be democratic and acceptable to all parties involved.
As the ADC concludes its convention, attention now shifts to its primaries to elect its standard bearer.
