Egypt Scale Through on Penalties

Egypt made history by defeating Australia on penalties to secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory.

The last-32 clash ended 1-1 after extra time before the Pharaohs triumphed 4-2 in the penalty shootout. Mohamed Salah converted a Panenka penalty, while Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning spot-kick after Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed their attempts.

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, but Australia equalised in the second half after an own goal by Mohamed Hany. Both teams created chances to win the match, but neither could find a breakthrough before penalties.

The result gives Egypt their first victory in a World Cup knockout match and sends them into the last 16, where they will face either Argentina. Australia bowed out despite pushing the match to penalties.
