The Federal Polytechnic Ukana in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has received approval from the National Board for Technical Education for 23 new programmes.
The approval increases the number of programmes offered by the institution to 44. The new programmes will begin in the 2026/2027 academic session. The initial approval will run for two years. However, the NBTE will conduct another quality assurance visit by September 2028 before granting full accreditation. The approval was contained in a letter signed by Ayo Aroge, Director of Polytechnic and Allied Programmes, on behalf of the NBTE Executive Secretary.
List of new programmes
The newly approved courses cover engineering, technology, science and management. The ND programmes include Surveying and Geo-informatics, Estate Management and Valuation, Building Technology, Petroleum Marketing and Business Studies, Crime Management and Artificial Intelligence.
The polytechnic will also offer ND Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Water Resources Engineering Technology and Renewable Energy Engineering Technology.
For HND programmes, the NBTE approved Science Laboratory Technology in five areas. They are Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physics with Electronics and Environmental Biology.
Other approved HND programmes include Cyber Security and Data Protection, Computer Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Business Administration and Management, and Accountancy. The HND Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology programme will have three options. These are Power and Machine, Electronics/Telecommunication, and Instrumentation and Control.
Polytechnic welcomes NBTE approval
The institution described the approval as another major achievement of the administration of its Rector, Mrs Edumma Essien. Meanwhile, the expansion is expected to give students more options when choosing courses. It will also strengthen the polytechnic’s programmes in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy and cybersecurity.
With the new approval, Federal Polytechnic Ukana will now have 44 programmes available to students from the 2026/2027 academic session.
