France Beat Morocco as Kylian Mbappe Fires Les Bleus into World Cup Semi-Finals

France overcame Morocco to book a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, with Kylian Mbappe leading the way despite an early penalty miss.

France secured a 2-0 victory over Morocco on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kylian Mbappe recovered from missing a first-half penalty to score his eighth goal of the tournament, while Ousmane Dembele also found the net.

Mbappe earned a penalty after being fouled by Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou comfortably saved his spot-kick. The Real Madrid forward responded in the 60th minute with a brilliant curling strike from the edge of the box to break the deadlock.

Just six minutes later, Dembele doubled France’s advantage after driving through the Moroccan defence and beating Bounou with a low effort.

The goal takes Mbappe level with Lionel Messi on eight goals at the tournament. However, the French star currently leads the race for the Golden Boot thanks to his superior assist tally. Mbappe also moved to 20 World Cup goals, just one behind Messi’s all-time tournament record of 21.

France dominated much of the match, creating several chances before eventually finding the breakthrough. Defender Lucas Digne struck the crossbar, while Bounou made several key saves to keep Morocco in the contest. All before the two quick second-half goals settled the tie.

There was a brief injury concern when Mbappe left the pitch with ice on his right ankle after being substituted. However, the 27-year-old celebrated enthusiastically with teammates after the final whistle, suggesting the issue was not serious.

France have now won six consecutive matches at the tournament and lead all teams with 16 goals scored.

Les Bleus will face either Spain or Belgium in the World Cup semi-finals.
