France is preparing for more extreme heat after several regions recorded historic May temperatures over the weekend.
France is experiencing unusually hot weather, with weather officials warning that temperatures could remain high in the coming days. This comes after multiple cities recorded their hottest May temperatures on record.
According to Meteo France, at least 10 locations saw record-breaking heat on Sunday, including the northwestern towns of Lorient and Noirmoutier. Paris also recorded its first temperature above 30C this year, reaching 31.9C on Saturday.
Authorities issued a yellow heatwave alert across parts of Brittany, marking the first time such an alert has been activated in May since the system was introduced in 2004.
The extreme heat has already had serious consequences. A 53-year-old man reportedly died after suffering a heart attack during a 10-kilometre race in Paris. Reports also state that 10 other runners were hospitalised in critical condition after another race near the capital.
Scientists continue to warn that frequent and intense heatwaves are becoming more common due to global warming.
