Iran says US deal not imminent despite progress in talks

Iran says major issues remain unresolved even as the US signals optimism over a possible agreement.

Iran has said a deal with the United States is “not imminent,” despite both sides confirming progress in ongoing negotiations.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said negotiators had reached agreement on “a large portion” of the issues under discussion, but stressed that no final deal was close to being signed.

The comments came after Marco Rubio suggested an agreement could be reached as early as Monday. US President Donald Trump also said over the weekend that talks were moving closer to a breakthrough.

Reports say the proposed framework includes a 60-day ceasefire extension, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and further negotiations over Iran’s nuclear activities and sanctions relief.

The talks follow months of tensions after US and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered regional conflict. Oil prices fell on Monday as hopes for a diplomatic agreement increased.
