Gillian Anderson Opens Up on Sexuality: ‘I Could Feel the Same Way About a Woman’

Actress Gillian Anderson has opened up about her sexuality and past relationships with women. The Sex Education star says she is attracted to people regardless of gender identity. She also revealed that she had romantic relationships with women when she was younger.

Anderson previously spoke about dating an older girl during high school. At the time, she kept the relationship private. She said she lacked the language and confidence to understand her sexuality. Despite also being attracted to men, she described her relationships with women as meaningful.

Anderson added that her life partner happens to be a man. However, she believes she could have felt the same connection with a woman.

Gillian Anderson Talks About Desire

Meanwhile, Anderson said other women helped her understand sexuality more deeply. Their conversations about desire and relationships gave her a broader perspective. She also believes many women her age are exploring their sensuality again. According to her, some are enjoying new experiences through dating.

Her role in Netflix’s Sex Education also changed how comfortably she discusses sex and desire. That experience later influenced her books, Want and More. Both books feature anonymous letters from women about fantasies, desire and personal experiences.

Her Past Relationships

Anderson first publicly discussed having relationships with women in 2012. Since then, she has spoken more openly about attraction and emotional connections. Her comments show that she does not see love as something limited by gender.

The actress was previously married to Clyde Klotz and Julian Ozanne. She also had a long-term relationship with The Crown creator Peter Morgan. The pair reportedly separated in 2020. However, later appearances sparked speculation about a possible reconciliation.
