Actress Hayden Panettiere reportedly took one pill before her death in South Carolina. Sources told TMZ the pill may have contained fentanyl. The actress died on August 16, 2026, aged 36. However, authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of death. Toxicology results are still pending.
According to reports, investigators are now focusing on a potential drug dealer in Los Angeles. Panettiere reportedly met her long-term dealer before travelling to South Carolina. The DEA is investigating the case across Los Angeles and South Carolina. Meanwhile, her former boyfriend Brian Hickerson has reportedly spoken with federal investigators.
The case took another turn after reports revealed Narcan at the scene. Narcan is commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses. Hickerson’s brother, Zach, said Brian gave Panettiere Narcan and performed CPR. Police also found a bag containing medication at the apartment. The specific drugs were redacted from the police report.
Panettiere had previously spoken openly about addiction and recovery. In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she discussed alcohol, opioid addiction and postpartum depression. She also recalled receiving “happy pills” at 15.
“They were to make me peppy during interviews,” she told People in 2022.
Her death has now sparked fresh concern about the dangers of fentanyl-laced pills.
