The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr Manassah Jatau, has commended the National Youth Service Corps and said the scheme continues to bridge manpower shortages across many states in Nigeria.
He gave the commendation on Friday while addressing NYSC officials, corps members, and staff during a procession held in Gombe to mark the scheme’s 53rd anniversary.
Jatau Highlights NYSC’s National Role
First, Jatau praised the founders of the NYSC and highlighted its impact since General Yakubu Gowon established it in 1973.
He said the scheme has promoted national unity and cultural understanding among young Nigerians.
According to him, the programme exposes corps members to different regions and reduces ethnic bias.
He recalled his own service year in Lagos in 1979 and explained how it shaped his national outlook.
“In addition, if you grow up in Ibadan and are only conversant with the South-West, you will be limited to Yoruba philosophy,” he said.
Corps Members Support Critical Sectors
Furthermore, Jatau said corps members play a key role in addressing manpower gaps in both urban and rural communities.
He noted that many states cannot recruit enough civil servants to fill essential positions.
As a result, corps members step into critical roles such as teaching, healthcare delivery, and public service support.
He urged them to remain disciplined, responsible, and committed to their duties.
“You are ambassadors of your religion, ethnic group and geopolitical zone,” he said.
Moreover, he stressed that the NYSC remains relevant 53 years after its creation because of its resilience and national impact.
Jatau Warns Against Fraud in Mobilisation
Meanwhile, the deputy governor warned against corruption in the mobilisation and posting of corps members.
He called on all stakeholders to avoid manipulation and unethical practices in the system.
In particular, he referenced past cases involving fake certificates and warned against any repetition.
“I pray that the aims and objectives of the scheme will continue to be realised,” he said.
Finally, he encouraged corps members to serve diligently wherever they are posted.
NYSC Praises Gombe Government Support
On her part, Gombe State NYSC Coordinator, Chinwe Nwachuku, praised the state government for supporting corps members.
She said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration has prioritised their safety and welfare.
In addition, she described the state government as “corps-friendly” and expressed appreciation for continued cooperation.
“We are grateful for the support and look forward to improved partnership,” she said.
