Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk says he will continue his fast despite growing concerns about his health.
Educationist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has refused to end his hunger strike after 20 days of consuming only salt and water. The 59-year-old has reportedly lost more than 9kg while protesting in New Delhi in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical movement calling for education reforms.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the cancellation of a major medical entrance examination over a paper leak. Wangchuk urged supporters to join a peaceful march to Parliament on Monday, saying their demands should be heard through democratic means.
Pressure grows on the government
Opposition leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Omar Abdullah, have called on the government to engage with Wangchuk. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has directed authorities to closely monitor his health and ensure he receives medical care if necessary.
The hunger strike continues to draw national attention as pressure mounts on the Indian government to respond to calls for education reforms.
