Iran condemns US strikes as ceasefire tensions escalate

Tehran has accused the United States of breaching the ceasefire after new strikes targeted sites in southern Iran.

Iran says recent US air strikes in the country’s south amount to a “gross violation” of the ceasefire agreement. Also warning that it will respond to what it called aggressive actions.

The strikes were confirmed by United States Central Command, which said it targeted Iranian missile launch sites and boats allegedly attempting to place mines near the Strait of Hormuz. The US described the attacks as “self-defence strikes”.

Iran’s foreign ministry said Washington would be held responsible for the consequences of the operation in Hormozgan province, which borders the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the renewed tensions, Marco Rubio said negotiations between both sides were still ongoing and that a deal remained possible.

The latest developments come as talks continue over Iran’s nuclear programme, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
