US launches self-defense strikes on Iranian missile sites

The US says the strikes targeted threats near the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing ceasefire with Iran.

United States forces carried out what officials described as “self-defense strikes” in southern Iran on Monday, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats near Bandar Abbas.

According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was launched to protect American troops from potential threats during the ongoing ceasefire. Officials said Iranian boats were attempting to place mines in the area.

A US official described the military action as “very small” in scope, with strikes focused around Bandar Abbas, home to Iran’s main naval base.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, criticizing Iran’s reported “tolling system” in the strategic waterway. Rubio said global powers, including China and Russia, oppose restrictions on shipping through the route.

The latest tensions come as Washington and Tehran continue negotiations over a possible agreement that could ease the conflict and restore stability in the Gulf region.
