Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz again amid US blockade row

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz has returned to restricted status, deepening tensions with the United States.

Iran announced that control of the Strait of Hormuz has “returned to its previous state” after accusing the United States of piracy through its continuing blockade of Iranian ports.

The statement came from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy command, which warned that restrictions would remain in place as long as Iranian shipping movements face threats.

Earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said the strait was fully open to commercial vessels following a ceasefire linked to tensions in Lebanon. Hours later, Tehran reversed course.

US President Donald Trump responded by saying the naval blockade would remain “in full force” until Washington’s transaction with Iran is “100% complete.”

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, with a major share of global oil exports passing through it daily. Any disruption can quickly raise oil prices and shake international markets.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Saeed Khatibzadeh, also rejected US pressure, saying Washington cannot dictate terms to other nations. He added that Iran prefers peace but would continue defending itself if attacked.

The development comes as a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon begins, allowing thousands of displaced people to return home after weeks of fighting.

Markets and governments are now watching closely, as renewed restrictions in Hormuz could trigger another global energy shock.
