Jehovah’s Witnesses have changed their long-standing blood transfusion rules. The new policy gives members more control over certain medical decisions. The Governing Body announced the change on September 18, 2026. It affects four major blood components used in medical care.
Under the new rule, members can decide whether to accept red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma or platelets. They can receive these components from another person’s donated blood. The organisation also allows members to decide whether to donate blood for medical products. Each person must make the decision based on personal conscience.
However, one major restriction remains. Jehovah’s Witnesses still reject whole-blood transfusions. The organisation linked the position to the Bible’s command to “abstain from blood.” It says members should consider their faith and conscience before choosing any blood component.
“Each Christian must make his own personal decision about the use of these four primary components in all medical and surgical care,” Geoffrey W. Jackson said.
The update marks a major change in how the group handles blood-related medical care. Previously, members were taught to reject these four primary components. Now, each member can decide for themselves.
The announcement has also sparked fresh debate online. Some people welcomed the change, while others questioned why the organisation changed its position.
