Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season as Brighton produced a dominant display to beat the champions 3-0 at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton started confidently after impressive victories over Coventry City and Manchester United. They quickly put Arsenal under pressure with their intensity and aggressive approach.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a strike from the edge of the box that went in off the post. Arsenal struggled to settle and looked unusually nervous in possession. The Gunners had won their previous nine league matches and seven games in all competitions this season before the defeat. They came close to responding shortly before half-time when Bukayo Saka found himself with an opportunity inside the area after Martin Odegaard’s deflected effort. However, he could not convert.
Brighton immediately punished the miss. Charalampos Kostoulas was given too much space on the edge of the box and turned before firing past David Raya to make it 2-0.
Mikel Arteta made no changes at the break but Arsenal could not produce the response he wanted. Brighton extended their lead 12 minutes into the second half when Chema Andres headed home from another Gross delivery, this time from a corner.
The result capped an impressive week for the Seagulls, who had scored 11 goals across victories over Coventry, Manchester United and Arsenal.
