Michael Kayode has earned his first senior Italy call-up after a string of impressive performances for Brentford in the Premier League, with the young full-back confirming he rejected an approach from Nigeria to represent the Azzurri.
The 20-year-old, who came through the academy at Fiorentina and won the Under-19 European Championship with Italy in 2023, spoke to the official FIGC website about the call-up and his life at this stage of his career.
“Nigeria approached me, but for anyone playing for Italy is an honour,” Kayode said, drawing a clear line under the question of international allegiance. He added that he found out about the senior squad inclusion just before Brentford’s match against Chelsea.
“I found out on my phone and it was an incredible emotion.”
Kayode has impressed in the Premier League this season and his form has caught the attention of new Italy head coach Roberto Mancini, who took time to outline his tactical expectations directly to the young defender.
“Mancini spoke to me and explained the tactical work he wants. There is always something to learn. Then having a captain of Donnarumma’s calibre is fantastic,” Kayode said.
The full-back also opened up on becoming a father at a young age, describing it as the greatest joy he has experienced.
“I can’t wait to get back to my little girl. Becoming a father at this age is an incredible emotion. I don’t think there’s any greater joy.”
Kayode is one of several young players in the current Italy setup as Mancini begins building toward the future.
