The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted consignments of Colorado, opioids and other illicit drugs concealed in cargo, music speakers and loaves of bread.
The agency said its operatives recovered more than 2.3 tonnes of assorted illicit drugs during operations across eight states. The operations were carried out in Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Kaduna, Plateau, Bayelsa and Kano states.
In Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted two consignments of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as Colorado or Colos, at the import shed of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja. One consignment contained 27 parcels of Colos weighing 32.20kg. A real estate agent, Abideen Jide Salami, was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly arriving to collect a large luggage containing the drug. The agency said Salami used a secret collection code provided by his brother, who is based in the United Kingdom.
A follow-up operation linked to another UK consignment led to the arrest of 44-year-old Nurudeen Abiodun Kadiri. He was allegedly designated to receive 12.25kg of Colos. NDLEA said he told investigators that his brother in the UK had sent the consignment.
In another operation in Lagos, the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation intercepted a music speaker containing three packs of Colorado. The consignment was seized at a motor park in Maza-Maza and was reportedly headed for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, before ultimately reaching Liberia. A tour agent, Ifeanyi Obed Augustine, and the alleged owner of the consignment, Obasi Ugochuckwu, were arrested. The arrest took place during a sting operation at a nearby eatery.
The arrests formed part of wider NDLEA operations across the country targeting the movement and distribution of illicit drugs. The agency said the operations resulted in the recovery of more than 2.3 tonnes of assorted illicit substances.
