Nigeria will face Russia in an international friendly on October 6, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed.
The match was announced by the NFF on its social media platforms. Following suit, the Russian Football Federation also confirmed the fixture on its official website. The encounter is set to take place in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, as part of the European country’s preparations during a planned football camp.
The fixture will be Russia’s second tune-up match of the camp. However, it will not be recognised as an official international fixture by FIFA or UEFA.
Russia’s national teams have been under an indefinite ban from both governing bodies since February 2022. The suspension came as a result of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, which has continued to affect Russian participation in international football. Russia has therefore been unable to compete in FIFA and UEFA competitions since the ban was imposed.
Nigeria will head into the friendly after playing two AFCON 2027 qualifying matches in late September. Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles are scheduled to host Madagascar on September 25. Afterwards, they will travel to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.
