‘Nigeria’s democracy in jeopardy’ — Atiku faults Supreme Court delay in ADC leadership case

Atiku Abubakar

Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has expressed concern over the delay by the Supreme Court in delivering judgment on the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that it could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Atiku said the situation poses a threat to the country’s democratic process, particularly ahead of the 2027 general election.

“It is increasingly evident that Nigeria’s democracy, and indeed the integrity of the 2027 general elections, is in serious jeopardy,” he said.

“Democracy itself is now facing an existential threat.”

However, Atiku said he does not believe the judiciary would act in a way that compromises democratic values.

“I do not want to believe that the judiciary… would align with the ruling APC in any effort that could undermine or destroy our democratic foundations,” he added.

His comments follow recent developments in the ADC leadership dispute.

The David Mark-led faction of the party had written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, seeking a timely ruling on the matter before the Supreme Court.

Last Tuesday, the apex court reserved judgment in an appeal filed by Mark over the leadership tussle in the party.

The dispute has continued to generate political tension as parties try to beat the May 30 deadline for nomination of candidates.
