Erling Haaland breaks Brazilian hearts as Norway marches on

Erling Haaland scored twice to send Norway past Brazil and into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in history.

Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16, with Erling Haaland scoring two late goals to eliminate the five-time champions. The Manchester City striker broke the deadlock in the 79th minute before sealing the victory with a powerful strike from outside the box in the 90th minute.

Brazil missed a first-half penalty after Bruno Guimarães was denied by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. Neymar converted a stoppage-time penalty for Brazil after a VAR review awarded a second spot-kick, but the goal came too late to prevent the South Americans from crashing out.

The defeat marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990. Norway, meanwhile, have reached the quarter-finals for the first time and will face either England or co-hosts Mexico in the next round.

Haaland’s match-winning display keeps Norway’s dream alive and moves the striker level with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.
