Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at 84. His family announced his death on Wednesday through his son, Olusoji Jacobs. The news has sparked an outpouring of tributes across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
In an Instagram post, Olusoji described his father as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He also honoured him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” The family said they were grateful to God for his life. They also asked the public to respect their privacy during this difficult period.
“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” Olusoji wrote.
Olu Jacobs built a remarkable career across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. After that, he appeared in British television shows and international productions. He later returned to Nigeria and became one of Nollywood’s most respected actors. His powerful performances earned him several major industry honours.
Beyond acting, Jacobs played an important role in Nigeria’s film industry. He worked closely with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, through the Lufodo Group.
Together, they supported the growth of performing arts in Nigeria. Jacobs also received the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. He later earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.
His work leaves behind a lasting mark on Nigerian entertainment.
