Oshiomhole: It’s too early to discuss next senate president

Adams Oshiomhole, senator representaing Edo North senatorial district, says discussions about who will become the next senate president are premature, insisting that his immediate focus is securing re-election to the senate.

His position comes following disputes between him and Senator Godswill Akpabio who is pushing for amendment of the senate rule to exclude senators who have not been senator for a two consecutive year.

Oshiomhole spoke during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday while responding to questions about his political ambition ahead of 2027.

The former Edo governor said he could not speculate about becoming senate president when he had not yet secured another mandate from his constituents.

“Have I been elected yet?” he asked.

“I cannot take the people of Edo for granted.”

According to him, his current senate tenure would expire in June and his attention remains on securing the support of voters in Edo North.

“Right now, I have applied,” he said.

“I have been screened, and on Monday I will be going for primaries.”

Oshiomhole said discussing leadership positions in the senate before elections would amount to taking the democratic process for granted.

“I think we should take it step by step,” he said.

The senator also dismissed suggestions that he was strategically positioning himself for the senate presidency.

“If you choose to drop the gun and want to play God, I will not join you to play God,” he said while responding to repeated questions on the issue.
