Tems admitted feeling nervous while performing at the Obama Center opening in Chicago, despite captivating guests at the star-studded event.
Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, delivered a memorable performance at the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
The event brought together some of the biggest names in global music. Guests cheered loudly as Tems shared the stage with stars including Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Common, Bono, The Edge, Marc Anthony, and The Roots.
The ceremony took place on Wednesday at John Lewis Plaza on the center’s 19-acre campus. It officially dedicated the $850 million facility ahead of its public opening on June 19. Former U.S. President Barack Obama attended with his family, including his daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama. Several global political and entertainment figures were also present.
Before her performance, Tems addressed the audience in a stunning red gown. She said, “I am so blessed and honoured to be here… this is you, everyone, here, to Mr and Mrs Obama, to Sandra, and all the family.” Her heartfelt speech received warm applause from guests at the ceremony.
However, the singer later revealed she became nervous after mistakenly calling Obama’s daughters by the wrong names while speaking on stage. Reacting on social media, she wrote, “Lord knows I was nervous! Please forgive me!!!”
Despite the slip-up, Tems earned praise for her performance. The globally televised event also featured former U.S. Presidents Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Community celebrations at the center will continue until June 21.
