Two Newly Deployed Policemen Killed in Benue

Two newly deployed Mobile Police officers have been killed in an ambush in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The officers were attached to the community and were reportedly travelling to escort the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo back from Makurdi when they were attacked. The incident occurred at about 6pm on Monday, according to reports.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Peter Aondongu confirmed the attack to journalists in Makurdi on Tuesday. Aondongu said the DPO’s entourage was ambushed while returning from Makurdi to Ayilamo. He confirmed that two policemen were killed in the attack. The identities of the officers had not been released when the report was filed.

The latest attack brings the number of policemen killed in Ayilamo within three days to six. Four other Mobile Police officers and seven civilians were killed in a separate attack on the community on Friday.

Residents told journalists that the latest attackers were suspected to be armed men operating from forests and abandoned villages within Tombo Council Ward of Logo LGA.

They also raised concerns about the movement of armed men through forests and deserted settlements in the area. The residents called for sustained security operations to prevent further attacks and protect communities in the area.
