Ukraine drones strike Russian oil facilities as war intensifies

Ukraine targeted key Russian energy infrastructure overnight as both sides intensified drone warfare.

Ukraine launched coordinated drone attacks on Russian oil and fuel facilities across several regions overnight, triggering fires and disruptions to energy operations. One of the largest strikes hit the port city of Taganrog in Russia’s Rostov region, where a tanker, fuel tank, and administrative building caught fire after being struck by drones.

Russian officials said two civilians were injured when a drone hit a private home in Taganrog. Additional attacks reportedly targeted oil facilities in Krasnodar Krai, Yaroslavl, and Volgograd, with the Volgograd oil refinery forced to suspend operations.

Russia responded with a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, launching 90 drones and two ballistic missiles. Ukrainian authorities said attacks damaged energy infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia, leaving about 13,000 residents without electricity. Infrastructure, homes, and vehicles were also damaged in the Sumy region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence reports suggest Russia is preparing a new large-scale offensive. He called on allies to speed up deliveries of air defence systems, including Patriot missiles.

The latest exchange comes amid growing regional tensions, days after a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Romania. An incident which has since drawn condemnation from NATO and the European Union.

The conflict continues to escalate as both Ukraine and Russia intensify attacks on military and energy infrastructure.
