Russia says a large-scale Ukrainian drone strike hit the Moscow region overnight, leaving three people dead and several others injured.
Russian officials said air defence systems intercepted hundreds of drones during the attack, which targeted areas around Moscow, including Khimki and Pogorelki. According to regional governor Andrey Vorobiev, a woman died after a house collapsed in Khimki, while two more people were killed in Pogorelki.
Sergei Sobyanin said 12 people were injured after drones struck an oil refinery in Moscow. Several homes were also damaged, while debris from intercepted drones reportedly landed near Sheremetyevo Airport.
Ukraine has not officially commented on the latest strikes. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently pledged retaliation after a deadly Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv earlier this week killed 24 people.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said Russian drone attacks injured at least eight people in the Dnipropetrovsk region overnight, with homes and infrastructure damaged in multiple districts.
The latest escalation highlights the growing intensity of long-range drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine as the conflict continues into another year.
