The United Nations has called for independent probes into recent airstrikes in Nigeria and Chad over concerns about civilian casualties.
The United Nations has urged Nigeria and Chad to launch independent investigations into recent military airstrikes linked to operations against armed groups.
UN rights chief Volker Türk said both countries must ensure that military campaigns against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fully comply with international humanitarian and human rights laws.
Türk stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be targeted during military operations. He also called on both militaries to take all possible precautions to prevent civilian harm during counterterrorism missions.
The statement follows growing international concern over airstrike incidents in parts of West and Central Africa where armed insurgent groups remain active.
The UN says accountability and independent investigations are critical to protecting civilian lives and maintaining international legal standards.
