South Africa’s Consul-General to Nigeria, Prof Bobby Moroe, has explained why singer Ayra Starr was denied a South African visa in 2024. The clarification comes after Nigerians reacted to Tyla’s planned performance in Nigeria. Some fans recalled Ayra Starr’s earlier visa issue and questioned why Tyla should be allowed into the country.
According to Moroe, Ayra Starr’s visa was rejected because of an incorrect yellow fever certificate. He explained that the singer’s team submitted a certificate from another country. However, they were expected to provide a certificate from their home country. The envoy stressed that the decision had nothing to do with Ayra Starr being Nigerian or famous.
Moroe also revealed that the issue happened in February 2024. He said the controversy was later revived by reports claiming Ayra Starr and her team were denied entry into South Africa. Following the reports, the South African mission met with her team and explained the correct visa requirements. The matter was eventually resolved, and Ayra Starr received a one-year visa.
“I do not see the relevance of that rejection to the development of today, except for using that rejection to sow division,” Moroe told Punch.
He added that the singer was later allowed to travel to South Africa for performances. Moroe further explained that visa rules apply to everyone, regardless of their status.
“If you meet the requirement for a visa, whether you are a star or not, tall, short, black or white, if you qualify, you will get it,” he said.
“But if you don’t, regardless of who you are, the immigration section will uphold the immigration law of the country.”
