US President Donald Trump is set to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington for a high-profile state visit focused on trade, technology, Taiwan and wider US-China relations.
Xi arrived in the United States on Wednesday, September 23, beginning a three-day visit that will run through Friday. The visit is the Chinese leader’s first trip to the US in more than a decade. It is also the second meeting between Xi and Trump within six months.
Trump is scheduled to greet Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan at Joint Base Andrews before hosting a formal State Arrival Ceremony at the White House on Thursday. The ceremony will include military demonstrations and a flyover featuring a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptors. A state dinner will follow at the White House on Thursday evening.
The extensive welcome comes as Washington and Beijing try to manage tensions over trade, critical minerals, Taiwan and technology.
Trade is expected to be a major focus of the talks. The two countries reached a broad economic arrangement in late 2025 after months of escalating tariffs and Chinese restrictions on rare earth exports.
Under the arrangement, China agreed to suspend or ease several retaliatory measures and provide greater access to rare earths and other critical minerals. The United States agreed to maintain a suspension of heightened reciprocal tariffs on Chinese imports until November 10, 2026.
The upcoming deadline has increased attention on whether Trump and Xi will agree to extend the trade arrangement. The two governments have also made progress this year. A May agreement established US-China boards for trade and investment. China also made commitments involving American agricultural products and rare earth supply chains.
