Anambra State Government Launches Mobile TB Testing Initiative with Tricycle Fleet

The Anambra State Government unveiled a fleet of tricycles to support mobile tuberculosis testing across the state. The launch took place on Monday as part of activities commemorating World Tuberculosis Day.

Commissioner Announces Initiative

Commissioner for Health Afam Obidike announced the deployment during a press briefing in Awka. He stated that the tricycles would transport medical personnel and testing equipment to remote areas with limited healthcare access. Obidike explained that the initiative aimed to reduce tuberculosis transmission through early detection and prompt treatment.

“The government recognizes that many residents in hard-to-reach communities lack access to diagnostic services,” Obidike said. “These mobile units will bridge that gap and bring testing directly to the people.”

Tuberculosis Burden in Nigeria

Nigeria ranks among the 30 countries with the highest tuberculosis burden globally. The World Health Organization reported that the country recorded approximately 467,000 tuberculosis cases in 2023. Anambra State health officials identified transportation barriers as a significant obstacle to screening and treatment adherence in rural communities.

Mobile Strategy Details

Each tricycle carries portable GeneXpert machines for rapid molecular testing. Medical teams can collect sputum samples and return results within two hours. The state health ministry trained 24 laboratory technicians and 36 community health workers to operate the mobile units.

Furthermore, the program integrates directly with the state drug supply chain. Patients diagnosed with tuberculosis receive immediate enrollment in the directly observed treatment short-course program.

Community Response

Local government chairpersons from three pilot districts attended the unveiling. Chairperson of Aguata Local Government Area Chidi Okeke praised the state government for prioritizing rural healthcare. He pledged to support the mobile teams with community mobilization and security.
