Plateau attacks leave six dead, several injured in fresh violence

Fresh attacks in Plateau State have left families grieving and communities living in fear.

At least six people were killed and several others injured after coordinated attacks on two communities in Plateau State. The incidents happened in Shonun community of Riyom Local Government Area and Hurum in Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

According to local sources, armed assailants arrived on foot during the night and opened fire. Four people were reportedly killed in Hurum, while five others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment. In Shonun, two residents were confirmed dead, with three others hospitalised.

Community representatives said residents had earlier raised concerns over suspicious movements and the arrival of unfamiliar herders in the area. They claimed security agencies were informed before the attacks, but no preventive action was taken.

Local vigilantes reportedly tried to defend the communities but were overwhelmed by the attackers’ superior weapons.

The attacks have renewed fears over the ongoing security crisis in Plateau State, where several rural communities have suffered repeated violence, killings, and displacement in recent years. Many residents have already fled their homes for safer areas.

The Plateau State Police Command said it was yet to receive a full briefing on the incidents at the time of reporting but promised to provide updates after gathering details from officers in the affected areas.

Residents are now calling on the federal and state governments to strengthen security presence and prevent further bloodshed.

As Plateau mourns again, pressure is mounting for urgent action to stop the cycle of violence.
