Police arrest 42 illegal miners in Kwara after Monarch’s abduction

Security agencies have intensified operations in Kwara after the kidnapping of a traditional ruler triggered fresh concern over rural safety.

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested 42 suspected illegal miners as investigations continue into the abduction of Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda in Olayinka community, Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Police authorities linked the arrests to ongoing efforts to uncover those behind the monarch’s kidnapping and restore security in the area. Officials did not immediately confirm whether any of the suspects were directly involved in the abduction, but said investigations are ongoing.

The traditional ruler was reportedly kidnapped by armed men who later demanded a ransom of ₦400 million for his release, raising tension across the community and surrounding areas.

Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, described the incident as disturbing and said authorities had launched urgent rescue efforts.

According to him, combined teams of security personnel, forest guards and local vigilantes have expanded search operations across nearby forests in a bid to secure the monarch’s safe return.

Yusuf appealed to residents to remain calm and support security agencies with useful information that could aid the rescue mission.

He added that cooperation from the public remains critical in tackling insecurity and restoring peace in affected communities.

The arrests also highlight growing scrutiny around illegal mining activities in parts of Kwara State, where unregulated operations have raised repeated concerns over crime, environmental damage and local unrest.

Authorities say protecting lives and property remains a top priority as efforts continue to rescue the abducted monarch and identify all those connected to the case.

The latest operation signals a stronger crackdown as Kwara seeks answers in the monarch abduction case.
