Nigerian Army Rejects MASSOB Memorial Directive in South East

Army Declares Order Illegal and Risky

The Nigerian Army has strongly warned residents of the South East against a directive issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). In addition, it described the order as illegal and capable of disrupting regional peace.

Furthermore, MASSOB directed churches to hold memorial services for Civil War victims. It also instructed residents to observe a sit-at-home on May 30. However, the Army immediately rejected both instructions.

Security Forces Warn Against Compliance

According to the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, security agencies will not tolerate unlawful gatherings. In addition, he noted that the directive lacked legal backing.

Moreover, he warned residents to disregard any activity outside official national commemorations. He further explained that some groups linked to MASSOB and IPOB plan to enforce the order.

Consequently, he said such actions could trigger fear and instability. Therefore, he urged clerics and citizens to stay away from any related mobilisation.

Army Assures Residents of Protection

Meanwhile, the Army assured residents that security forces will protect lives and property. In the same vein, it encouraged churches and communities to continue normal services without fear.

Similarly, it warned that any attempt to disrupt peace would attract legal consequences. In addition, it stressed that joint security operations remain active across the region.

Operation Udo Ka Reaffirms Position

Furthermore, the South East Joint Task Force, Operation Udo Ka, reacted to the directive. It acknowledged the emotional impact of the Civil War on families.

However, it stated that illegal memorial orders cannot be accepted under any circumstance. In addition, it emphasized that Nigeria already has official remembrance events.

These include Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Army Day, and Independence Day. According to the task force, these occasions provide lawful platforms for national reflection.

Call for Peace and National Unity

Finally, the Army urged residents to embrace peace, unity, and lawful conduct. Likewise, it stressed that honouring fallen heroes must follow approved national structures.

Ultimately, it warned that any attempt to incite division or panic will not be tolerated. In conclusion, it reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining stability in the South East.
