Authorities have shut schools and tightened security following fresh bandit threats and attacks targeting communities and students.
Three people, including a school vice principal and a six-year-old child, were killed when heavily armed bandits attacked Iluke Bunu in Kogi State. According to the police, the attackers arrived on about 40 motorcycles and invaded the area, allegedly intending to abduct students and residents.
The victims were identified as Vice Principal Ganiyu Anifowose, 70-year-old Sunday Jacob Alhassan, and six-year-old Sunday Ayele. Security forces, including police, military personnel, and local vigilantes, repelled the attack, killing one suspect during a gun battle. A security operative was also injured and is receiving treatment.
The attack has heightened fears over school safety in Nigeria. In Edo State, the government ordered the closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area. This comes after intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS) warned of a planned mass abduction of students by bandits.
Despite the closures, candidates sitting for the ongoing WAEC examinations will continue writing their papers under strict security arrangements.
Security agencies say investigations are ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to prevent further attacks on schools and communities.
