The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has dismissed eight teaching and non-teaching staff members over offences including examination misconduct, absenteeism, abandonment of duty and financial irregularities.
The institution also delayed another staff member’s promotion by two years after disciplinary proceedings found him liable for negligence of duty and examination-related misconduct.
Governing Council approves sanctions
The disciplinary measures followed deliberations at the university’s 174th Governing Council meeting.
Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Dr Icha Chukwuka, announced the decision in a statement released on Saturday.
He said the council reviewed reports submitted by its disciplinary committee before approving the sanctions.
According to the statement, nine staff members faced disciplinary action. Eight lost their appointments, while one received a delayed promotion.
Eight staff dismissed
The university dismissed Prof. Emilia Oyira of the Department of Nursing Science over alleged examination misconduct.
It also dismissed Mr Ukachukwu Echezunachi Darlington of the Department of Chemical Pathology.
Mrs Akinrinade Opayemi Ogunluyi of the Department of Microbiology also lost her appointment over alleged absenteeism and abandonment of duty.
Likewise, Dr Arum Priscilia Nchekwube of the Department of Internal Medicine lost her job over the same allegations.
The council also dismissed Mrs Okoi Nyesam Eni of the Clinical Medical Hostel for absenteeism and abandonment of duty.
Meanwhile, Mr Joseph Edet Okon of the Works Department lost his appointment over allegations of vandalising and removing armoured cables.
The university also dismissed Mr Eworo Valentine Ibor of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry. It accused him of falsifying and altering examination results.
In addition, the institution dismissed Mr Emmanuel Adariku of the Alumni Relations Office. The council linked his dismissal to the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from the Friends of Malabor Alumni Trust Funds account.
Promotion delayed
Besides the dismissals, the Governing Council delayed the promotion of Dr Mathias Agba of the Department of Nursing Science by two years.
It also ordered him to forfeit 50 per cent of his withheld salary after finding him liable for negligence of duty and alleged examination misconduct.
UNICAL reaffirms zero tolerance
Meanwhile, the university reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, accountability and ethical conduct.
The management said Vice-Chancellor Prof. Offiong Offiong would continue promoting integrity, excellence in service delivery and zero tolerance for unethical practices across the institution.
