Andrea Pirlo has left the race to become Italy’s national football team coach after facing criticism over his links to Russian betting company Fonbet.
Although the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had not officially confirmed his appointment, Pirlo was widely expected to take the role.
However, politicians and public figures questioned the decision because Pirlo became a global ambassador for Fonbet in October 2025. The company has sponsored sporting events involving Russian military veterans and hosted appearances by pro-Kremlin figures.
In a statement on Instagram, Pirlo said he was informed that he was no longer a candidate. He insisted his work with Fonbet was strictly commercial and related to his coaching position at Dubai United.
Pirlo rejected claims that the partnership reflected his political views. He said assigning political motives to the agreement was unfair and did not represent his beliefs.
The controversy intensified after Pirlo attended a Fonbet event in Moscow earlier this year. Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych criticised the appearance, noting it coincided with a major Russian attack on Ukraine.
The failed appointment has also placed pressure on new FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini, who reportedly helped lead the search for Italy’s next coach.
Italy is now expected to consider other candidates, including Antonio Conte and former national team manager Roberto Mancini.
