Aisha Yesufu, activist and senatorial aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Abuja senatorial seat, says Peter Obi is her “principal” and not her political godfather.
Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Monday, Yesufu said her support for Obi is based on conviction and not personal ambition.
“I don’t have a godfather. It’s not a godfather, he is my principal,” she said.
The activist also clarified that she was never a member of the Labour Party despite publicly supporting Obi during the 2023 election.
“I was never in the Labour Party,” she said.
“I was a supporter of Mr Peter Obi.”
Yesufu explained that she joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) before later moving to the NDC alongside Obi.
“For me, I gave my word to Peter Obi,” she said.
“I see him right now as that person who has the empathy, who is patriotic and who cares enough about Nigeria.”
She described her support for Obi as a personal decision rooted in trust and shared values.
“I want someone that gets into office and I don’t need to keep making demands,” she said.
Yesufu also rejected suggestions that she abandoned activism for politics.
“I’m not leaving advocacy or activism into politics,” she said.
“I’m taking advocacy and activism into politics.”
According to her, if elected senator, her primary responsibility would be to hold the executive accountable.
“You can’t come as a president with frivolous applications for loans and Aisha Yesufu representing FCT will just approve it,” she said.
Asked whether she supports Obi because of political ambition, Yesufu said her loyalty predates her current aspiration.
“If it was because of my ambition, I would have run in 2023,” she said.
“A lot of people wanted me to run. I said no.”
