Musa Says Terrorism Has Reduced Nationwide
Bello Matawalle has rated the security performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration between 65 and 70 per cent.
The minister said military operations have significantly reduced terrorism across Nigeria.
He spoke during an interview on ARISE News while reviewing the administration’s three years in office.
According to him, the country now faces more isolated kidnapping incidents instead of widespread terrorist attacks.
“No nation is totally free from crime and criminality,” he stated.
Minister Blames Family Breakdown for Kidnappings
The minister described kidnapping as a growing social problem linked to declining family values.
He said many criminal acts now involve relatives and close associates.
According to him, society must address moral decay and rebuild stronger family systems.
“We have fathers kidnapping children and brothers kidnapping sisters,” he said.
He also urged Nigerians to reject shortcuts to wealth and embrace honest work.
School Abductions Raise Fresh Concerns
The minister’s comments came shortly after several school abductions shocked the country.
At least 82 pupils were kidnapped during attacks in Borno State and Oyo State between May 13 and May 15.
Armed groups abducted 42 pupils in Askira Uba and Chibok areas of Borno State.
In Oyo State, attackers kidnapped another 40 pupils from multiple schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
Gunmen also killed teacher Michael Oyedokun and other victims during the attacks.
Amnesty International Raises Alarm
Amnesty International reported that kidnappers abducted at least 1,100 people between January and April 2026.
The organisation described the trend as evidence of ongoing security failures affecting vulnerable communities.
Several northern states have continued to experience mass abductions despite military operations.
Military Highlights Operational Successes
The minister pointed to recent military successes against terrorist groups.
He revealed that security forces recently eliminated a deputy ISIS commander after months of intelligence tracking.
According to him, Nigerian troops now receive stronger support from citizens and local communities.
“The level of support we’re getting is far better than before,” he said.
Nigeria Expands International Security Partnerships
The minister also confirmed stronger military cooperation with foreign partners.
He said countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Brazil and Turkey continue to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
According to him, the partnerships provide advanced equipment, training, and operational expertise.
He warned that terrorism becomes harder to defeat once it gains deep roots in society.
Government Promises Continued Action
The minister assured Nigerians that security agencies would continue offensive operations against criminal groups nationwide.
He said authorities remain committed to restoring peace and improving public safety across affected regions.
